What We Do

Consultation

During a consultation at Gynaecologic Oncology NZ we will discuss your medical concerns and diagnosis and review your health history. An examination may be required which could include a pelvic examination. We will then explain any further tests that may be required and discuss your treatment options. If a surgery is recommended we will explain this in depth and you will also meet with one of our nurses to schedule the surgery and review any pre-operative instructions.

Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a procedure done in the office where a special magnifying instrument (colposcope) is used to examine the cervix and vagina for signs of abnormal cells. This is usually done after a high-risk Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) test or an abnormal cervical smear test.  This may also involve taking a small biopsy for diagnosis.

Surgery

We offer surgery at Southern Cross, St Georges and Forte Health. Prior to surgery you will have a consultation with the Gynaecologic Oncologist and a preoperative visit with one of our nurses. You will also have close follow-up after your surgery to ensure you are recovering well. This will include direct phone contact with our nurses and afterhours support.   If you live a distance from Christchurch we will likely ask your referring gynaecologist or general practitioner to assist with your follow-up to reduce your need to travel.

Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is another tool in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and may be a treatment option that is discussed with you. Robotic surgery involves the surgeon controlling the instruments and robotic arms from a console allowing complex surgeries to be done with small incisions to allow a quicker recovery.

Susie Mourton has been doing robotic surgery since 2006 and has done well over 1000 robotic surgeries. She is also involved in training other surgeons in this technology across the country.
